Web Site Organization & Structure

I read an article a while back that said 90% of all web sites are ineffective. Or to put it another way, only 10% of all web sites do the job they were meant to do. Creating a web site is an exercise in being observant.

It’s another one of those funny things. I have people come to me and say, “I want my site to work like my competitors site so I can compete with them.” On closer examination, the client finds that the site they wanted to copy doesn’t do the job it is supposed to do.
Think about your web site needs not in terms of what you think you need but in terms of what your customer needs. Consider your own experience and how many times you have been searching for a product or information only to give up in frustration.

Look deeper at the sites you visited. Did they mislead you into thinking they had something you wanted so they could get more visitors? Did they have what you were looking for but it was so deeply buried you never found? Maybe the description was confusing or the check out process didn’t work right.

You want your site to stand out and be in that other 10%, you want your site to support your customers needs and in doing so support your needs (creating growth of your company through your web presence).
